STD Facts & Awareness Workshop

As soon as the first signs of puberty strike, the clock is ticking. Parents, teachers, community groups and health professionals need to act quickly to ensure children get hold of STD facts that are accurate and really drive home the dangers of unprotected – and even protected – sex.

Contracting an sexually transmitted disease, also known as an STD, STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) or VD (venereal disease), is no laughing matter and can range in severity from the embarrassing and uncomfortable to the fatal.

The STD facts that children and teens pick up from one another are often dangerously inaccurate, particularly if there is an agenda involved, which is why those STD facts need to come from a reputable source.

2020 Dreams STD Awareness workshops can help your school or young person’s institute to educate young people in a way that is entertaining, engaging and effective.

Teens will be brought up to speed on all of the well-known STDs, from the widespread and virulent chlamydia to gonorrhoea, syphilis, genital herpes, pubic lice (crabs), hepatitis and, of course, HIV and AIDS. Then there are the less familiar diseases, including BV, HPV, PID and trichomoniasis.

Key Stats*

  • In 2017, there were approximately 440,000 STD cases in England.
  • Chlamydia was the most prevalent STD with 206,744 cases recorded..
  • Between 2013 and 2014, cases of syphilis and gonorrhoea showed the greatest increase, up 33% and 19% respectively.

Exploring Attitudes to Sexual Relationships

A 2020 Dreams STD Awareness workshop does more than just present the STD facts to young people. Through open forum discussions, carefully managed by our experienced facilitators, children and older teens get to explore their attitudes around sex and to really think about whether the many physical and emotional risks (from STDs and unplanned pregnancy to anxieties about sexual performance and body image) are really worth the short-lived thrills of sexual activity.

Thank you so much for helping us out at such short notice!

Thank you so much for helping us out at such short notice! All three sessions (Contraception, Sex & Making Better Choices and Gang Awareness) were really well run and very valuable to our students. As I was walking around I could see all students were fully engaged and having lots of fun. Staff commented on how engaged students were during the workshops and we would most certainly love to have your team back again!

The Consent & Contraception workshop went really well

The Consent & Contraception workshop went really well. The facilitator was incredibly engaging, he was able to hold the students’ attention very easily and there was a great balance of humour and seriousness. I’ve had really positive feedback from the students already, they have learned so much but don’t feel overwhelmed with facts and figures and it wasn’t death by PowerPoint. We would be delighted to invite 2020 Dreams back.

Students will be reminded that they always have a choice and that they should never feel pressurised or coerced into having sex when they are not ready. Through drama-based role-plays, young people will be given the opportunity to practise the skills needed to deflect peer pressure in a way that preserves dignity and increases self-esteem.

To cover all bases, the workshop will also include the different forms of contraception available, including which ones can protect against both STDs and pregnancy. Students will be made aware that the only 100% effective method of avoiding STDs is to abstain from sex altogether.

STD Awareness and the National Curriculum

The National Curriculum stipulates that all children have to have PSHE education, and that Key Stage Three and Four children must also be taught about Sex and Relationships.

Effective Sex and Relationships education has to include up-to-date STD facts, and a focused 2020 Dreams STD Awareness workshop will ensure that students receive the latest information, giving teachers the confidence that nothing has been missed and no inaccurate STD facts have slipped through. Children may also be more comfortable asking awkward questions to a stranger rather than to teachers that they will then have to see every day.

Dealing with Sensitive Situations

It is possible that some students may already be concerned about an STD infection and may confide in our facilitators. All of our workshop leaders are trained to be alert to this possibility and to provide sensitive and accurate advice.
