Stranger Danger Workshop

Keeping children safe from harm is the number one priority for parents, teachers and children’s service providers, so it is surprising how hit and miss stranger danger education is in our homes, schools and institutions.

2020 Dreams Stranger Danger workshops are the ideal solution for teachers and care providers who want to ensure that their young people are learning the key skills they need to recognise dangerous situations, identify potential abduction attempts, avoid or escape from danger and raise the alarm.

2020 Dreams Stranger Danger workshops can be tailored to any age group and our skilled facilitators use proven methods to engage with children and raise awareness without causing unnecessary fear.

Key Statistics*

  • There were nearly 900 child abduction and child kidnapping offences between 2013 and 2014 (an increase of 13% from 2012-2013).
  • 7.4 offences of child abduction or child kidnapping were recorded per 100,000 children in 2013-2014.
  • Non-parental child abductions increased at more than twice the rate of parental abductions between 2012/13 and 2013/14.
  • It is estimated that around one-fifth of all kidnappings involve children.

Beyond Stranger Danger

Some stranger danger workshops are outdated, focusing narrowly on what to do when a stranger approaches with offers of sweets or cute puppies. But these so-called ‘incentive lures,’ are not the only techniques which abductors use to ensnare children.

Some may pretend they are acting with instruction from relatives (authority lures) or may simply start up a conversation to extract personal details for future use.

Children also need to be aware that most abduction attempts are from people that they may recognise or have a friendly connection to and that, in some cases, a stranger may be the safest person to approach (for example, if an inappropriate approach happens in an empty  park where the only other adult is a parent with their own children).

2020 Dreams fun and engaging workshops use proven educational methods such as role-plays to help children to model and rehearse the behaviours that will best protect them in the real world. Our workshops will also teach them how to remain aware of their environment at all times (being ‘streetwise’).

Gang Workshop Was Appropriately Shocking and Informative

The Gang culture workshop was appropriately shocking and informative and therefore hugely beneficial for the students. The charisma, emotion and personal touch of the facilitator running the workshops contributed immeasurably to the impact the workshops had. Above all, his humour and charisma left the students with a huge amount of personal growth.

Knife Crime Sessions Was Absolutely Brilliant!

The  4 x 1 hour Knife Crime sessions were absolutely brilliant. Our students (and staff!) were thoroughly engaged and all thought that this was something we needed to discuss, especially with the holidays on the horizon. The speaker that you sent us couldn’t have done a better job on the day.

Please can you express my thanks

Please can you express my thanks for the Gang Prevention and Knife crime sessions put on at South Devon College, the learners all took away something from it and gave them some food for thought. Thank you so much, Steve was a great presenter and they all thought he was great.

They will learn how to avoid getting themselves into, or being drawn into, dangerous situations and how to prioritise the safety of themselves and their friends.

They will also be coached into recognising a potential abduction attempt and given the skills to get out of harm’s way; they will learn how to use their voice, body language and movement to make their escape and raise the alarm, and who to go to for help depending on the specific situation.

2020 Dreams stranger awareness courses are suitable for young people of any age, but the sooner children are introduced to the subject, the better prepared they will be when they are given more independence (for example, being allowed to walk to and from school). Far from frightening children, 2020 Dreams training will leave them feeling empowered and able to deal with real world situations.

Stranger Danger and e-Safety: A Broad Approach

A 21st Century stranger danger workshop has to include the online realm of cyberspace which offers new ways for potential abductors to gather information and build relationships with their intended targets. Both the 2020 Dreams Stranger Danger and Staying Safe Online courses cover this modern phenomenon, ensuring that children leave the workshop with the clear understanding that people they meet online may not be who they say they are.

Our courses also help young people to understand what kinds of information should be kept private and how to recognise and deal with an inappropriate approach online.
