Road Safety Awareness for Kids Workshop

The number of young people killed and seriously injured on Britain’s roads is a national tragedy, particularly since every collision between a child and a vehicle is preventable. 2020 Dreams are committed to helping schools, colleges and other education providers in fulfilling their responsibilities to young people by delivering high-quality, engaging information on road safety for kids of all ages.

2020 Dreams Road Safety Awareness workshops can be customised for your specific area and will always be carefully tailored to the age and experience level of your students. It is never too early to teach young people about road safety and every conscientious school head should ensure that there is adequate road safety provision for the children under their care.

Key Statistics*

  • In 2013, an average of one child was killed and 37 injured per week on Britain’s roads.
  • Most deaths or serious injuries to children occurred on the way home from school, 58% of them between the hours of 3pm and 7pm.
  • 78% of children involved in road accidents failed to look properly when crossing.

*From the Department of Transport: London, 2013.

Road Safety for Key Stage One and Earlier

When providing information on road safety for kids, it is crucial to pitch it at the right level. Very young children are especially vulnerable on the roads because of their developing senses, lack of awareness and distractibility.

Gang Workshop Was Appropriately Shocking and Informative

The Gang culture workshop was appropriately shocking and informative and therefore hugely beneficial for the students. The charisma, emotion and personal touch of the facilitator running the workshops contributed immeasurably to the impact the workshops had. Above all, his humour and charisma left the students with a huge amount of personal growth.

Knife Crime Sessions Was Absolutely Brilliant!

The  4 x 1 hour Knife Crime sessions were absolutely brilliant. Our students (and staff!) were thoroughly engaged and all thought that this was something we needed to discuss, especially with the holidays on the horizon. The speaker that you sent us couldn’t have done a better job on the day.

2020 Dreams Road Safety Awareness courses will focus on helping younger children to understand the language of road safety before moving on to teaching and reinforcing safe behaviours such as holding a parent’s hand, staying away from the kerb and never crossing alone.

Road safety for kids near the end of Key Stage One will include more advanced awareness training such as locating safe places to cross, identifying hazards and following the Green Cross Code.

Road Safety for Key Stage Two and Later

As children become more independent, they are exposed to different kinds of risks. Whereas road safety for kids in Key Stage One needs to focus mainly on helping them to become road aware and teaching them sensible behaviours, children in Key Stage Two, particularly those on the verge of secondary school, need to be coached in the importance of making wise choices.

Older children will spend more time without adult supervision and under the influence of their peers. Some children may lack awareness on the roads or indulge in reckless behaviour and this can pressurise their friends to take more risks than they would on their own. Road safety workshops for this age group need to be more hard-hitting, focusing on the consequences of making poor choices both for those involved and for their friends and families.

2020 Dreams Road Safety Awareness workshops can also be effective as part of Citizenship education in secondary schools, and even in colleges where some children will be looking forward to becoming drivers themselves. This is an ideal opportunity to remind children and adolescents of their responsibilities and drum into them the possible repercussions of poor decision-making.

2020 Dreams Road Safety Awareness Workshops

From teaching basic road awareness and road safety for kids at a primary school reception class to delivering a powerful, memorable message to sixth-formers, 2020 Dreams can design a Road Safety Awareness workshop relevant to your needs.

Our experienced and sensitive facilitators will make sure that all content and language is appropriate to the age group they are presenting to and will use proven methods such as role-plays and open discussion forums to maximise concentration and the retention of information.

2020 Dreams Road Safety Awareness workshops also give young people the chance to talk about their own experiences and to raise any concerns they may have about road safety for kids in their area. Some of this can be fed back to the school to help with community road safety provision.
