Internet Safety for Kids Workshop

At 2020 Dreams, we believe that teaching internet safety for kids workshops has to be a top priority for schools, since many parents lack the skills and confidence to properly protect their children from online dangers.

Computing and mobile technology have developed massively over the last 20 years and continue to bring us exciting new ways to work, learn, play and socialise online. But there is a serious flip-side to the benefits the internet delivers, particularly for children who are learning the skills to use a wide range of IT platforms well before they reach the social and psychological maturity to protect themselves from harm.

Even the best online security software is no substitute for a clear understanding of the dangers that lurk in cyberspace and the steps that children can take to protect themselves, recognise problems and, if necessary, report any concerns they might have.

Gang Workshop Was Appropriately Shocking and Informative

The Gang culture workshop was appropriately shocking and informative and therefore hugely beneficial for the students. The charisma, emotion and personal touch of the facilitator running the workshops contributed immeasurably to the impact the workshops had. Above all, his humour and charisma left the students with a huge amount of personal growth.

Knife Crime Sessions Was Absolutely Brilliant!

The  4 x 1 hour Knife Crime sessions were absolutely brilliant. Our students (and staff!) were thoroughly engaged and all thought that this was something we needed to discuss, especially with the holidays on the horizon. The speaker that you sent us couldn’t have done a better job on the day.

2020 Dreams Staying Safe Online workshops cover every aspect of internet safety for kids, from understanding what personal information is, and how to keep it private, to recognising and responding to cyber-bullying. Our workshops are presented by experienced facilitators who are skilled in engaging with young people, and content can be tailored to suit the needs of any age group, from primary school children to adolescents.

Key Statistics*

  • 13% of teachers said that their school did not have an e-safety policy. Of those that did, only 72% of teachers said that their policy was regularly reviewed.
  • Only 58% of teachers felt that their pupils had the skills and knowledge to use IT safely at home.
  • 52% of teachers said that their pupils had experienced cyberbullying, mainly via social networking sites.

*From the UK Council for Internet Safety: London, 2013.

Online Protection in the National Curriculum

Computing forms a statutory part of the National Curriculum and the combination of this focused tuition and personal experience means that many children quickly learn how to navigate their way around a keyboard and the World Wide Web. By the time children reach secondary school, and often earlier, they are already sophisticated IT users able to circumvent security protocols and parental controls to get what they want.

For this reason, internet safety for kids needs to be brought in early and to focus on teaching children the real dangers they face and the implications of making unwise choices.

The National Curriculum’s Computing section states that students should be taught to be “responsible, competent, confident and creative users of information and communication technology.”

It is the responsibility of primary school teachers to educate their pupils to, “use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private,” to recognise unacceptable behaviour and to, “identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.”

By the end of Key Stage Three, children should be able to use IT securely by protecting their own identity and privacy and recognising inappropriate content. By the time they leave school they should also understand, “how changes in technology affect safety, including new ways to protect their online privacy and identity, and how to identify and report a range of concerns.”2020 Dreams specially tailored Staying Safe Online will ensure your school or institution delivers on these government demands.

Internet Safety for Kids: Understanding the Dangers

Some parents can be blasé about allowing their children to roam free in cyberspace; therefore, it becomes more important that teachers step in to provide guidance on internet safety for kids. This can be difficult when the dangers may not be immediately apparent.

Among the topics that 2020 Dreams Staying Safe Online workshops cover are:

  • How to minimise the risk of accessing inappropriate content, how to recognise such content and what children need to do if they do come across it.
  • Which details need to be kept private and what can happen if personal details fall into the wrong hands.
  • False identities, including how adults can pose as children online, and what to do if someone makes inappropriate contact.
  • Cyber-bullying: the forms it takes, the effects it can have and how to tackle it.
  • The dangers of sexting and sharing explicit images (all content is age appropriate).
